In the O&O section of the Department of Genetics of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), we are offering a 2-year research technician position within the Department’s Organ-on-Chip program. The current focus of this position is to set-up and apply differentiation protocols for development of gut-, liver-, and blood vessel-cells from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). We intend to seed these cells onto microfluidic chips and, in the future, to interconnect these chips to study, for instance, the gut-liver axis. The technician’s main tasks will be (1) to provide support for the processes of generation of hiPSC lines from urine or PBMC samples from control individuals and patients, (2) to set up protocols for hiPSC differentiation towards gut epithelial cells, liver hepatocytes and other cell types, and (3) to provide technical support to the group of highly motivated PhD students who are working on these projects. This position is being realized through funding to Professor Jingyuan Fu and will be embedded in the Organ-on-Chip team of the Department of Genetics supervised by Associate Professor Sebo Withoff. This team has been assembled with funding to Professor Cisca Wijmenga in the context of the NWO Gravitation Program ‘NOCI’ (Netherlands Organ-on-a-Chip Initiative).
Tasks will include (but may not be restricted to):
- Preparing laboratory equipment, instruments, solutions, assays and other supplies as needed for research experiments
- Maintaining inventory and purchasing equipment and materials for the laboratory
- Rotating within the iPSC- and tissue-culture program for the Organ-on-Chip work
- Maintaining accurate and detailed records of tasks and experiments in an electronic labjournal
- Recording raw data, performing quality checks and preliminary analysis, and generating summary reports on research findings
- Responding to and completing tasks as instructed or requested by the Primary Investigator and other colleagues associated with the designated research projects
What do we need
- At minimum, a B.Sc. degree in Biomedical or Biotechnological Sciences (e.g. HLO opleiding)
- Experience with molecular genetics and/or stem-cell (iPSC) techniques is preffered
- An affinity for state-of-the-art technology and equipment
- An affinity for high-throughput genomics analyses
- A colleague who is precise, stress-resistant, flexible and result-oriented
- Good spoken and written communication skills in English (essential) and Dutch
- A colleague who contributes actively to both small-scale and large-scale work discussions
- A colleague who works independently, but realizes that the group is a team effort
- A colleague who can work in accordance with the quality demands associated with a shared research-diagnostic lab
The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.
In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.
What do we offer
Your salary will be a maximum of €3,184 gross per month (scale 7), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment.
In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
