Job description

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is chronic progressive, disabling demyelinating, neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) for which the primary cause is yet unknown. While MS manifests as a disease with distinct disease courses, (ongoing) demyelination and EBV infection are among others common denominators. In this project, we will examine whether EBV infection brought into the CNS by B cells is directly linked to loss of cells that produce myelin (oligodendrocytes) and demyelination, and therefore at the basis of the onset of MS. Elucidation of the cell biological mechanism underlying this novel principle on the cause of MS will provide new targets for therapeutic intervention that may prevent further development of MS.

The project will be performed in close collaboration with Dr. Sander van Kasteren (Leiden University). The position is funded by Stichting MS Research and is made possible by MoveS.
