The department of paediatric cardiology at the Beatrix Children’s Hospital, University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), one of the 4 licensed centres for the treatment of congenital heart diseases in The Netherlands, is an international centre of expertise on pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure in children.

The department is the national referral centre for children with pulmonary (arterial) hypertension. All Dutch children suspected to have pulmonary hypertension are referred to our centre for confirmation of diagnosis, initiation of therapy and standardized follow-up visits, in close collaboration with our network centres.

Our department conducts leading clinical, fundamental, and translational research in the field of pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease, such as tetralogy of Fallot, Fontan circulation and right heart failure. Our clinical research focuses on the improvement of diagnostic and imaging techniques, treatment strategies and survival of these patient groups.

A dynamical enthusiastic research group, comprising of multiple PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and international experts in the field of pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, closely collaborates on multiple (international) research projects. The large international network of our research group provides opportunities to work together with researchers across the world.

Job description

We offer a combination of a challenging clinical PhD-position focussed on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in children, with the function of national network coordinator of our national network for pulmonary hypertension in childhood.

PAH is a severe disease that regretfully is still often lethal in children. The aim of the PhD program is to develop a self-learning prediction model, using machine learning techniques, which can predict progression of the disease, prognosis and effect of treatment in the individual patient and thus can be used to improve treatment strategies and survival of these children.

In The Netherlands, the care for children with PAH is organized within the national network for paediatric pulmonary hypertension. As network coordinator you will represent the expert centre, UMCG, and maintain contact with the other treatment centres within the network. You will be responsible for managing our national prospective patient registry.

The paediatric cardiology department offers you the opportunity to follow the full PhD program of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and develop into a broadly oriented independent researcher.
