Working environment

We are looking for a business developer to strengthen the UMCG Center for Development and Innovation (CDI) team on the theme of cohorts and biobanks. Within this position you will work on establishing new public and private partnerships, improving the processes involved and developing new collaboration models. As part of CDI you are actively involved in setting up collaborations with external partners, both via departments and the UMCG Cohort and Biobank Coordination Hub (CBCH), the umbrella for all UMCG activities around this theme.

You are part of the CDI team, a multi-disciplinary team that fosters innovation and the translation of UMCG expertise, facilities and knowledge together with trusted partners to improve healthcare and create added value in greater society. Valorisation is, besides care, education and research, one of the four key performance indicators for UMCs. CDI enables valorisation of research through public private partnerships, collaborative consortia, centres of expertise, industry sponsored research, licensing and spin offs.

You also join the CBCH as lead on activities related to external collaborations. This new team is working on a central (network) organization and infrastructure to support and improve the quality and visibility of the approximately 175 UMCG cohorts and biobanks. In this role you contribute to the conditions for excellent research, new collaborations and patient impact. The CBCH is a fast-growing organization, with its associated dynamic qualities.

In addition to these organisational units, you have regular contact with Legal Affairs (especially the Desk Contract Research), the researchers associated with the individual UMCG cohorts and biobanks and other internal parties involved in external collaborations (Strategy and Internal Relations, Communication, Research Office, etc.).

Job description

You will primarily focus on streamlining the internal processes surrounding cohort and biobank collaborations and establishing new external collaborations. This includes the following tasks:

  • Advising and facilitating cohorts and biobanks with regard to external partnerships.
  • Answering questions from researchers and external parties about cohort and biobank collaborations. These questions can come via the CDI or the CBCH Servicedesk.
  • Setting up and/or adjusting internal processes, Standard Operating Procedures, templates, umbrella agreements, etc. with regard to public and private partnerships around cohorts and biobanks.
  • Driving the creation of new policies on relevant topics.
  • Proactively develop new collaborations by contributing to the visibility of UMCG cohorts and biobanks (representation of events / networks, input communications, etc.).
  • Develop new collaborative models to promote the use of cohorts and biobanks.

What do we need

  • Academic working level, preferably with several years of experience in a relevant working environment.
  • An education in the life sciences or a related field. A promotion in a relevant direction is preferred.
  • Experience with (bio)medical research, preferably in the context of cohorts and/or biobanks.
  • You are able to advise senior researchers on public-private research collaborations.
  • You are an initiator and a real networker and can work both within a complex matrix organization such as the UMCG and in external networks.
  • You can work independently, but you also actively seek collaboration and alignment with the involved parties. Hereby, you function as linking pin between the different teams (CDI / CBCH).
  • You come up with new ideas and see opportunities, and you can also translate these into practically feasible plans and realization.
  • You have excellent oral and writing skills in English and have a working proficiency in Dutch (or are willing to develop this on short notice).

We like it even more when you:

  • Have experience with business development in a public-private life science setting.
  • Have experience in working at a company in the aforementioned field.
  • Have an existing national and/or international network with regard to life science companies and/or relevant academic partners.
  • Have knowledge of the relevant national and international legislation and regulations (AVG, WMO, GCP, etc.) regarding (human-related) medical research.

What do we offer

We offer a two-year contract for 32 - 36 hours per week (0.9-1 FTE) in a dynamic and positive environment. There is a lot of room for personal initiative. An appropriate remuneration will be offered for this position based on knowledge and experience. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
