Final point of referral care is for patients who suffer from rare diseases which are hard to diagnose and/or difficult to treat. By law, this is a key task of the university medical centers like the UMCG. Even though these patients make up for less than fifty per cent of the UMCG’s patients, they claim a larger proportion of the UMCG’s resources due to the complicated nature of their complaints. Both diagnostics and treatment of these patients are difficult. As an University Medical Center like the UMCG is their only alternative, the take precedence over patients requiring only basic care. This latter category can also be helped in a regular hospital.
