Jean-Pierre Pierie appointed professor of Endoscopic Surgery

Dr J.P.E.N. Pierie has been appointed professor of Endoscopic Surgery, in particular of teaching and training, on 1 February 2011 at the University Medical Center Groningen.

Jean-Pierre Pierie (Ede, 1967) studied medicine at Utrecht University. In 1995 he was awarded a PhD by the same university for a thesis entitled ‘Healing of the cervical oesophago-gastrostomy’. He followed the gastro-intestinal oncological surgery programme at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, and also the gastro-intestinal surgery specialization of the surgery programme at Utrecht University. Pierie has worked as a surgeon and lecturer at the Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden since 2001, and has also been teaching at UMCG since 2002.

His research will focus on the effectiveness and evaluation of the teaching methods and the results of structured training in endoscopic surgery – from the skills lab to video-assisted studies and implementation in daily practice. The emphasis will be on safeguarding and increasing the quality and safety of endoscopic surgery and designing a structured teaching programme.
