Dried blood spot (DBS)

Print

The dried blood spot method gives you the opportunity to collect blood at home via finger prick blood sampling. The blood droplets will be used to estimate the drug concentration in your blood. In order to collect your blood you have to puncture your finger with a lancet and fill at least two circles of the blood spot card with blood. You can send the dried blood spots card to the Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology Laboratory of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The result of the analysis will be discussed by your physician over the phone or at a follow-up appointment with your physician. In the menu left on this page an instruction video and the procedure can be found.

Pros

By using the dried blood spot method, you will experience less pain compared to the venous blood collection. Another pro of the dried blood spot collection is the fact that you can collect your blood by yourself at home. This means you do not have to go to the hospital for drug concentration tests anymore.
