Career & Personal Development

Within the UMCG, several parties can help you with your career and personal development either through general career support (information on terms of employment) or specific opportunities to advance your scientific career at an early and advanced stage. For information about the general terms of employment within the UMCG, see the website ‘Werken in het UMCG’

Service overview

If you are a PhD student, you can contact the Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) for information on possible career paths and perspectives after your PhD.

A way to further your academic career is through the Tenure Track system, a career path of approximately ten years that leads to professorship. For information about the Tenure Track within the UMCG, see Tenure Track UMCG (ENG), Tenure Track UMCG (NL), or the general information on the website of the RUG.

Grants and funding services are available within the UMCG to help you advance your scientific career. For example, the Research Office offers advice and training on personal grant applications, and the Grant Support Hub can help you with consortium grants. Visit the page Grants, Funding & Financial Issues on the UMCG intranet for an overview of the services.

The Wenckebach Instituut provides training and professional development within the UMCG. Although they mainly focus on healthcare professionals, they also offer courses for researchers, coaching and assessments services (e.g. 360-degree feedback). Visit the website for the current courses.

The Research Institutes at the UMCG can help you connect with other researchers. For educational career perspectives, see the documents: Onderwijsloopbaanperspectief (NL), Principal Educator Geneeskunde in het UMCG (NL) and the request form Principle Educator (NL) on the UMCG intranet.
