CVO - Consortium for Valorisation and Entrepreneurship

Strategy and Objectives  

The goals of the CVO Groningen for the period 2011-2017 are:

  • Promotion of an entrepreneurial mindset among students and teachers;
  • Development of entrepreneurial qualities and skills among students and teachers;
  • Support and guidance for starting and developing companies;
  • Improving access to state-of-the-art knowledge for entrepreneurs;
  • Encourage the awareness that knowledge development leads to economic and/or social return.
  • Organisation of a full range of basic valorisation facilities such as entrepreneurship education, incubators, funds, knowledge portal and an active valorisation center.


These objects will be achieved by the following strategy:

  1. T

he promotion of an entrepreneurial climate and new entrepreneurship by the knowledge institutions (entrepreneurship awareness, education and support);

  • Active valorisation of generated knowledge via economic and societal applications (screening and scouting), and
  • Strengthening the innovative capacity of enterprises in the region by intensified interactions between companies and universities.

 

Target groups  
  • Scientists, students and graduates of the Hanze University Groningen, University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen who (want to) engage in knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship in sectors such as Energy and Healthy Ageing and supporting fields as Sensor technology and ICT.
  • Companies or employees in companies engaged in innovation in sectors such as Energy and Healthy Ageing and supporting fields as Sensor technology and ICT.
What Facilities offers CVO?  

1. Entrepreneurship Education / Center of Entrepreneurship VALUE050

  • Assessments and early awareness programmes in the first year.
  • Short courses, workshops and training on economic, social and northern themes for students and teachers.
  • Minor Programmes Entrepreneurship.
  • Business Competitions.
  • Entrepreneurship specialisation within various components
  • International Master in Entrepreneurship Education & Training (IMEET), offered in collaboration with the Aarhus Business School, for teachers to improve the quality of entrepreneurship education
  • Textbook "E-ship in the sciences'', a textbook for graduate students about entrepreneurship, especially in the natural sciences.
  • Master Variant Science, Business and Policy.
  • PhD awareness programme 'Science to the Market ", to create economic value from knowledge generated in PhD research projects.
  • Valorisation Summer School for young bachelors, masters and PhDs in the final phase of their training.
  • Coaching in different phases and aspects of entrepreneurship (COACH050).


2. Public-Private Partnerships

  • Matchmaking between companies and knowledge institutions through brainstorms, systematic judgement of the demand and -aggregation and development of the inner circle of SMEs.
  • More structural approach to the development of Public-Private project planning and organisation of R & D Collaboration.
  • Coaching in the development of joint business plans, patent management, etc.


3. Screening & Scouting

  • Valorisation Center where staff from the Business Generator Groningen, from “Research and Valorisation” of the University of Groningen (RuG), the Liaison Platform Hanze University (HG) and the legal and financial departments of HG, RuG and UMCG bring in expertise and work closely together.
  • Screening of new knowledge for economic and/or social applicability and support the structured development of these applications (if necessary and possible, including the protection of intellectual property).
  • Scouting potential entrepreneurs or companies to actually use the new knowledge into practice.
  • Knowledge account managers, arising from the Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands (HANNN).
  • Communities of practice on promising innovation themes in both alpha, beta and gamma clusters.
  • Involvement of industry in the screening and intensive scouting.


4. Supporting Basic Facilities

  • Development and application of a self-analysis and improvement system for valorisation and knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship (MONITOR050).
  • Structured cooperation with cluster organisations as Energy Valley, Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands and Sensor Universe that act as communities of practice and knowledge accountmanagers and NOM, TCNN and knowledge of HG and RUG that act as knowledge portal.
  • Development of Proof-of-Concept Fund for feasibility studies.
  • Development of patent fund for protection of intellectual property.
  • Development of preseed Tech Ovation Fund in cooperation with Rabobank.
  • Development of incubators and accelerators (Venturelab Groningen) for start-ups and  developing companies on Zernike Science & Business Campus and Healthy Ageing Campus.
  • Expansion of facility sharing, starting with a pilot on Healthy Ageing Campus.
