The multidisciplinairy research in the UMCG is organised in five Institutes. Each Institute covers a specific part of the UMCG research area which is reflected by the research programs within each institue. The number as well as the nature of the research programs is constantly being up-dated and adjusted depending on progressing scientific insight especially in the field of Healthy Ageing. With regard to education of future scientists (MSc and PhD) the fiver Research Institutes collaborate in the Graduate School of Medical Sciences assuring the incorporation of adequate and up-to-date scientific know-how. 

In  each Research Institute the UMCG focus on Healthy Ageing is approached from the Institutes central theme as listed below:

1. Chronic Diseases and Drug Exploration (GUIDE)
2. Biomaterials (W.J. Kolff Institute)
3. Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN-BRAIN)
4. Health Research and Epidemiology (SHARE)

5. Fundamental, Clinical and Translational Cancer Research (Oncology)
